The benchtop ELM-3R Luminoscope uses a cold cathode electron flood gun to induce light emission, called cathodoluminescence (CL), from some materials in visible, as well as ultraviolet and near infrared wavelengths. Cathodoluminescence often reveals details of the growth history of minerals at very fine scales not easily detectable by other methods. Captured images are extremely useful for guiding further analytical work. This instrument is designed primarily for imaging larger areas, millimeter to centimeter, than the CL systems on our electron beam instruments.
