Leica ACE600 Coater
The Leica ACE600 coater system is a high vacuum deposition instrument capable of creating thin, fine grained conductive coatings in both carbon and metals. Our particular instrument is configured with a head for carbon thread evaporation and a head for metal sputtering. Our metal sputtering head currently has its Iridium target installed. The touchscreen system uses a series of standard recipes that have been created by the department to provide quick, simple, commonly used coatings for different samples and sample holder combinations. This coater has a crystal thickness monitor that automatically calculates depositional thickness based on the material selected. This ACE600 has both rotary and planetary stages to mitigate shadowing effects on irregular samples. We have machined a variety of custom sample holders and stages that allow for efficient coating of many sample types including pin stubs, petrographic thin sections, one inch round thin sections, epoxy plugs, one-cm tubes, irregular samples and combinations of these sample types.
