Applying to NHRE
This opportunity is open for US citizens, nationals, or permanent residents. Eligible undergraduate students should be enrolled in a degree program (part-time or full-time) leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree. Students who are transferring from one college or university to another and are enrolled at neither institution during the intervening summer may participate. High school graduates who have been accepted at an undergraduate institution but who have not yet started their undergraduate study are also eligible to participate. Students who have received their bachelor's degrees and are no longer enrolled as undergraduates are not eligible to participate.
To apply please create an account on the ETAP website, then search “NHRE” under “Search Opportunities” or go directly to the opportunity page.
As part of the application procedure, students will need to identify a field of interest and/or specific individuals with whom they are interested in working. Information about research areas and staff directories can be found through the department websites listed below. Students can also browse past projects from previous years for inspiration by visiting the past projects page.
Prepare your application materials early! The application takes time, so consider preparing your application materials by using this list as a guide:
- Current resume
- Recent school transcripts
- One reference letter. Select people who can speak strongly on your behalf and instruct them to submit a letter before the application deadline.
- Get ready to write an essay describing your interest in the NHRE program and the natural history disciplines.
Students selected for placement in the NHRE program will be given full details about their specific research mentor, department, and project in the offer letter.
We will provide two live information sessions for potential applicants on December 17 at 2:00 pm EST and on January 7 at 3:00 pm EST. Please register by following either of the previous links to receive the Zoom information.
