As a public health precaution due to COVID-19, all Smithsonian museums are temporarily closed. We are not announcing a reopening date at this time and will provide updates on our websites and social media.

Global Genome Initiative Gardens (GGI-Gardens)
GGI Gardens is a program to enhance global plant collections by strategically collecting and preserving genome-quality samples representing global plant diversity.
How many plant species are there? This can be a difficult question to answer, but according to The Plant List there are approximately 17,000 genera of vascular plants on Earth. GGI–Gardens uses this number for our goals tracking toward collection and preservation. The number of plant species with a sequenced genome is much less, however, due to the complexity of most plant genomes. Below are resources related to plant diversity, evolution, taxonomy, and genomics:
Additional information on internal funding opportunities, tools, and services that support genomics projects at the Smithsonian can be found on our internal GGI-page on Darwin.
