Virtual Field Trips
Virtual Field Trips are available for classroom educators. Each virtual field trip experience lasts around 30 minutes and are aligned to Florida state standards. Currently, there are four field trip options:
- Animal Architects (for grades 1-5): Students will learn how select marine animals (including coral reefs, barnacles and oysters) create biological habitat that is used by other marine organisms.
- Marvelous Mangroves (for grades K-3): Students will learn about mangrove ecosystems and the importance of interconnectedness in a biodiverse environment. This virtual field trip includes a pre-recorded video, an optional pre-trip activity and vocabulary guide, an in-lesson activity, and an optional post-activity. Answer keys are included in the teacher packet.
- Fintastic Fishes (for grades 3-5): Students will learn about fish anatomy and common fish adaptations. This virtual field trip includes a pre-recorded video, an optional pre-trip activity and vocabulary guide, an in-lesson activity, and an optional post-activity. Answer keys are included in the teacher packet.
- The Carbon Cycle (for grades 6-8): Our newest virtual field trip option will teach students the basics of the carbon cycle and why it’s so important for our aquatic environments.
These field trips are free for teacher use and will include a post-trip teacher survey. The virtual field trip materials can be used in both a physical classroom setting or in distance learning.
Teachers interested in receiving the virtual field trip materials should email the Education Dept at SMSEducation@si.edu.
