Monday's Webinar: Introduction to the Deep Sea
Description
Explore the deep sea habitat and learn about the important relationship between art and understanding our natural world. In this video, Museum Educators Lara Noren and Christian Thomas lead students in a drawing exercise to learn about the different levels, or zones, of the ocean and some of the animals that live in each one. This Zoom webinar aired July 13, 2020.
Editor's Note: After the webinar, our educators noted the program contained these mistakes:
- At around 35:00, we describe the nautilus as a mollusk, which is correct. We also mention the sea cucumber as an example; however, sea cucumbers are not mollusks — they are echinoderms, along with sea stars, sand dollars, and sea urchins.
- At around 45:20, we describe hydrothermal vents as being "tropical" or "almost balmy."They are actually very hot. The water in hydrothermal vents can actually reach up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature is incorrectly mentioned later, but is corrected.
