Science Illustration: A Creative Door for Early Women in Science
Article written by Raven Capone-Benko
The Department of Invertebrate Zoology has been home to many incredible and talented women throughout the years. Though the early twentieth century saw the sciences largely occupied by men, many great women broke through these societal norms of the time and made great contributions to their fields of study in other ways such as scientific illustration. Raven Capone-Benko, an Invertebrate Zoology contractor on the Marian Pettibone Biographical Project, has written an excellent piece for the Smithsonian Magazine documenting some of the department's most cherished illustrators over the years.
