| Crested-tailed Deermice live in wet mountain forests, preferably mature oak forests, at elevations above 1,900 m. These nocturnal mice are common in some locations and less in evidence in others. They are semi-arboreal: many that have been trapped were caught on fallen trees or low branches. They have long, thick woolly fur, long whiskers, big ears, and a distinct tuft at the end of the tail. Described as medium-sized for the genus, they weigh about half as much as a tennis ball.
