Rutile | NMNH 177197 | Brazil, Bahia |
Gift of Ms. Valaree Wahler in 2018.
An important specimen for the National Mineral Collection is this hematite encrusted with golden rutile needles. Fragile and incredibly beautiful, the formation of these elongated acicular crystals is amazing. Rutile is a mineral composed primarily of titanium dioxide with an adamantine to submetallic luster. Found in a fissure associated with quartz, this specimen was unearthed in 2017 in Bahia, Brazil. It measures approximately 5.5" x 4".
