Gift of Mrs. Lilian S. Turner in 1998.
The Mystery Diamond was gifted to the Smithsonian by Mrs. Lillian Turner in 1998, in memory of her husband, Milton Turner. The “mystery” of the necklace is the illusion that the diamond is much larger than it actually appears. The pear-shaped rose cut diamond is mounted in a closed-back yellow gold pendant setting. The rose cut diamond, a flat bottom with faceted top, is foil backed giving the illusion that the diamond has pavilion, or bottom, facets. The Mystery Diamond has the appearance of a 50ct diamond, however, all estimates put it at approximately 10ct.
