Opal | NMNH G11588 | Ethiopia | 75.30 ct |
Gift of Smithsonian Gem and Mineral Collectors in 2016.
Opals from Wollo, Ethiopia yield precious white, fire, crystal and sometimes black opals and are the predominant Ethiopian opals in the gem trade today. This 75 carat opal is a very unique specimen as it is large in size, has a brown body color, good play-of-color, and exhibits a finger-like structure called a digit pattern (vertical columnar structure), making it a wonderful upgrade for the National Gem Collection.
