Quartz with dumortierite
Gift of Ms. Luciana Barbosa in 2015.
These two cabochons are quartz with dumortierite from the western Bahia State, near the Vaca Morta quarry in Brazil. Quartz in this area was first found in late 2013 with fine needle-like inclusions or blue clouds of dumortierite. In late 2014 to early 2015, additional material was found with inclusions of a different nature, thicker bluish-grey needles. This appears to be the first time that well-formed, eye-visible crystals of dumortierite have been found in rock crystal quartz. Dumortierite is a fibrous aluminium boro-silicate mineral. As seen here, the dumortierite inclusions form as radiating blue clusters. The oval cabochon weighs 9.08ct and the triangular cabochon weighs 15.56ct.
