Marquise Diamond Ring | NMNH G4220 | South Africa | 29.30 ct |
The Marquise Diamond Ring was made by Cartier, Inc. during the Art Deco period. The platinum ring highlights an exceptional 28.3ct marquise cut diamond from South Africa. There are four triangular cut, eight baguette cut, and 60 round brilliant cut diamonds that are set along the shank and the undercarriage of the mounting in a garland motif. The Art Deco Period (1920-1935) produced dazzling jewelry that was dramatically different from the jewelry of the previous periods, shifting from soft colors and flowing sinuous lines of the earlier Art Nouveau and Edwardian eras to bolder, brighter colors and straight lines. New geometric cuts for gems complimented the symmetry and streamlined look of Art Deco jewelry. This ring is a stunning example of the style of jewelry being made by Cartier, Inc. during this time period. The Marquise Diamond Ring was gifted to the Smithsonian Institution in 1964 by Mrs. Adelaide Riggs, the daughter of Mrs. Marjorie Merriweather Post, and is on display in the Gem Hall at the National Museum of Natural History.
