Pearl and Diamond Ring | NMNH G8655 | 4.31 ct |
This ring is a beautiful example of the Edwardian style of jewelry. It was probably made between 1910-1920 and has the streamlined geometric look that started in the late Edwardian era and continued into the Art Deco period. The Edwardian period lasted from 1901-1920. During this exuberant time in history, the Belle Epoque, which is French for "beautiful era," elegance and fashion became society’s predominant values. Jewelers used platinum and diamonds and incorporated piercing and filigree techniques to create intricate delicate patterns that resembled lace with light and airy designs. The dominant color schemes were pale pastels and monochromatic white-on-white. Diamonds and pearls set in platinum were often favored, as seen in the ring. This ring is styled in a north-south manner and features a central pearl flanked by old European cut diamonds; set in the delicate pierced frame are smaller round cut diamonds.
