Matt researches sedimentary archives – rock cores, outcrops, and invertebrate macrofossils – to reconstruct climate and oceanic conditions during greenhouse time intervals in the Earth's geologic past. Much of his current research focuses on the geochemistry of mollusk fossils and rock strata from the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway in the Rocky Mountain and Great Plains regions of the United States, as well as studying deep sea sediment cores collected from his expeditions with the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) offshore Australia and South Africa. His fellowship at the Smithsonian will continue through the Fall of 2023.
