| The Coronados Deermouse, which has the darkest fur of any deermouse, lives on only one small island. Most of Coronados Island is the cone of an extinct volcano. As recently as 1994, a number of deermice were trapped in a sand spit and a few others among dark lava boulders. Feral cats on the island hunt the mice, which is why they are critically endangered.
