| Some Tehuantepec Jackrabbits live on sand dunes near salt water lagoons, and people throw fishing nets over them to catch them. They are also hunted with guns. In addition, their range along the coast and adjacent foothills is shrinking because it is being claimed by humans for agriculture. The jackrabbits are endangered - perhaps critically endangered. Sometimes called tropical hares, they are strictly nocturnal. Their coarse fur is brightest in the fall, when it is fresh and new after the summer molt.
