August 23, 1804: "The river here becomes more straight than we had found it for a great distance below ... We stopped at a prairie on the north side, the largest and handsomest, which I had seen. Captain Clarke [sic] called it Buffaloe prairie." Sgt. Patrick Gass
On the 22nd, an election was held among the Corps to replace the recently deceased Sgt. Floyd. The most votes went to Patrick Gass and his appointment to sargeant was confirmed by both Lewis and Clark. Gass never mentions this in his journal. (MacGregor 1997)
