Research Focus:

 

My lab focuses on understanding how human activities alter plant communities and ecosystem function at both modern and paleoecological timescales. In particular we are interested in ecological novelty, where new combinations of species or environmental conditions appear in response to global change. Our data sources include modern vegetation surveys, experimental manipulations, trait data, and biogeochemical analyses, combined with historical survey and paleoecological macrofossil data. Currently, our primary focus is on the impact of invasive plants on community composition, ecosystem function, and the links between them in disturbed temperate habitats.

From Amatangelo et al. 2014.. Fourth-corner results linking leaf traits to environmental variables in 151 upland forest sites across the state of Wisconsin. Dark red: significant negative correlations (p < 0.05); light blue: significant positive correlations (p < 0.5). MAT: mean annual temperature, MAP: mean annual precipitation. 1950s climate data are averages from 1944-1953, 2000s climate data are averages from 1996-2005. Soil data were collected in the 2000 time period; landscape data are from 1991-1993.
