| Many deermice are found on mountain slopes, but the Tawny Deermouse inhabits coastal lowlands. Deermice occur in a great variety of habitats, and often, wherever they are, they are the most plentiful mammal. They are active year-round, and in many places breed year-round as well. Newborn mice weigh only about half an ounce--as much as a US 10-cent coin (a dime). They grow up rapidly; they are weaned and independent in only a month or two.
