Our Way of Living
"In the spring the man said to the bear: 'There is a lot of snow outside. We will have to make boots for the children, or they will get cold feet.'" From "The Man Who Married a Bear," a traditional Prince William Sound story. Some traditional boots were made of seal and sea lion skin. Caribou skin boots like these were often beautifully decorated with caribou hair embroidery and colored strips of dyed seal lion esophagus. The dark band at the top is seal fur.
