Found only on lava fields on the Big Island of Hawaii, this tree has fallen victim to predation by non-native animals such as cattle, goats, and roof rats, and habitat competition with fountaingrass. The artist found her subject matter in the herbarium at the University of California Davis’s Center for Plant Diversity.
