Icons of Cyprus

Religious icons have a special importance in Orthodox Christianity. They are considered to be more than paintings; they are windows into the spiritual realm.

Icon painting on Cyprus closely followed the evolution of Byzantine painting on the mainland, but influences from Venice and elsewhere give Cypriot paintings a distinctive originality. In the 1400s an “Italian-Byzantine” style flourished on Cyprus, the work of painters who combined Eastern and Western techniques.
